Menopause Q & A

What is menopause?

Menopause is a normal part of your aging process. It marks the end of your reproductive period due to a reduction in the function of your ovaries and production of estrogen. Clinically, you are in menopause when you’ve gone 12 consecutive months without having your period.

Menopause usually occurs between age 45 and 55.

Dr. Pam seeks to destigmatize menopause as a disease, and has written a book called “Love, Sweat, and Tears” to educate women about their changing bodies.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

Symptoms and severity of symptoms of menopause vary from woman to woman.

Common symptoms of menopause include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Mood changes or depression
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Painful intercourse or disinterest in sex

You may start to experience these symptoms before you actually hit menopause during the perimenopausal phase of the transition as your hormone levels begin to fluctuate.

What are the treatment options for menopause?

Treatment options for menopause include:

  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Vaginal estrogen
  • Gabapentin, an anti-seizure medication that reduces hot flashes
  • Clonidine, a blood pressure medication that reduces hot flashes
  • Antidepressants

Treatment for menopause aims at relieving your symptoms, such as hot flashes, mood changes, and vaginal dryness. Dr. Pam works with you to develop an individualized treatment plan to reduce your individual symptoms and improve your quality of life.

As a doctor that wants you to know as much as possible about menopause, Dr. Pam spends a lot of time going over your symptoms, the physical changes happening to your body, and your treatment options.

How can MonaLisa Touch® improve menopausal symptoms?

The MonaLisa Touch® is a minimally invasive laser treatment that rejuvenates vaginal tissue to improve vaginal dryness. Its purpose is to improve the health of your vagina.

As you age, the skin of your vagina weakens, dries and loses its flexibility, causing it to become itchy and easily irritated. These symptoms worsen as your estrogen levels decrease.

Improving the health of your vagina with MonaLisa Touch laser treatments reduces these uncomfortable symptoms.

During treatment, Dr. Pam places the laser on the walls of your vagina, stimulating the production of collagen, a protein that gives your skin elasticity and strength, which tightens and strengthens the tissue.

MonaLisa Touch treatment also improves lubrication.
