What is Menopause?

What is menopause?

Menopause means that you have not a period in twelve months and you are now incapable of having a baby.  You are now “post-menopausal” and will be for the rest of your life.  This is a time of joy for many women:  they do not have to worry about pregnancy any longer and actually may be a time of freedom from worry about this.  Many women report a sense of personal fulfillment, a chance to focus on hobbies or other interests, and improved relationships with their spouse, partner, children, or friends.  Lifestyle changes were often initiated during this midlife period such as initiating healthy eating and exercise programs.

On the other hand, it can be a time of great sadness for some women.  Her menstrual period, the one thing that may have made her feel “womanly” is gone.  If she never had children, she may grieve the fact that her even small chance of pregnancy is gone.
